Audi’s 2.0L Turbo Engine

 

Audi’s notorious 2.0 litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine has gained recognition from car enthusiasts and auto journalists alike for its incredible reliability and for delivering an impressive combination of power and fuel economy. It made Wards 10 Best Engines list five consecutive years (2006 through 2010) and was also awarded the International Engine of the Year in 2009.

With these attributes and honours, it’s no wonder why the 2.0T is found under the hood in a number of models across the Audi line. It powers the brand’s entry level hatchback - the A3, the A4 mid-size sedan, the stylish, sporty coupe – A5, the iconic TT, the Q5 (the class leading small sport utility vehicle) and is now available in the full size A6 saloon. When the turbocharged four-cylinder was first introduced in the Q5 and the A6, luxury vehicle customers were unsure if it would provide sufficient power in these larger, heavier vehicles. But seat time is all that was necessary for them to appreciate this brilliant example of German engineering and admit that it does supply ample power to move these bigger, more spacious Audi models.

The 2.0T is paired with a number of different transmissions throughout the Audi line. It is coupled with a 6-speed manual, which is standard on the A4 and A5, a DSG (dual-shift gearbox) transmission in the A3 and TT, and an 8-speed automatic in the Audi A6 and Q5 (which is optional on the A4 and A5 as well). In all of these vehicles the turbocharged four-banger is tuned to produce 211 hp and a stellar 258 lb-ft of torque. Although the horsepower figure may not sound overly inspiring, the Audi A4 makes the sprint from 0-100km in only 6.3 seconds! This notable time is thanks to the engine’s ability to generate all of its torque at only 1,500 rpm and hold it steady to north of 4000 rpm, giving it very useable power for the person behind the wheel.

 

The 4.2L V8 has been replaced by a 3.0L supercharged V6, and the 5.2L V10 (from the S6 and S8) has been traded in for a 4.0L twin turbo V8. Fewer cylinders does not necessarily mean less power, the use of turbo and superchargers allow engines to produces more power while saving on fuel – ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ at its finest.
